To examine the types of Web sites and vendors dispensing antibiotics on the Internet, we conducted a search using 2 major search engines (Google and Yahoo) and the key words "purchase antibiotics without prescription" and "online (English only). Our purchase arrived from Mexico with no information on instructions for use of the medication. In usual face-to-face health care visits for respiratory tract infections during which antibiotics are prescribed, more than 90% of prescriptions are filled on the day of the office visit. Some prescription medication is sold without a valid prescription, which is a violation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. This practice also occurs in the United States even though the United States regulates the acquisition of antibiotics, which will be limited by prescription only. We therefore wanted to find out if the amount of time between online evaluation and getting treatment was significantly longer. Reducing inappropriate use of antibiotics is key to many antibiotic resistance initiatives. Our final list of URLs included 184 links to single vendors of antibiotics. Thus, as soon as patients receive over-the-counter antibiotics and self-treating self-limiting illnesses with drugs, such as upper-respiratory tract infections without complications, they are likely to suggest that the antibiotic was effective, and self-medicate in the future. Moreover, pharmaceutical companies may need to monitor who is selling their products and through what mechanisms.
